History

The Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees Association (NSGREA) began forming in 1983 to ensure retirees had “a voice in matters concerning their pension.” With support from the NSGEU, the Association was officially established in 1985 and soon expanded membership to all Public Service Superannuation Pension recipients. Early achievements included securing extended health benefits for retirees and multiple improvements to Survivor Benefits.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, NSGREA grew provincially, creating ten regions and advocating on major pension issues, including cost of living adjustments and representation on pension governance bodies. The Association played a key role in forming what is now the Seniors Advisory Council and actively opposed proposed increases to Seniors Pharmacare in 2016.

NSGREA also introduced a retiree dental plan, developed safe driving courses, and strengthened regional engagement. Despite pandemic related disruptions, the Association continued its work and, by early 2023, surpassed 3,400 members—reflecting nearly four decades of sustained advocacy for retired public employees.
