I have always though of June as a ‘page turner month’…we really turn the page from late spring to the new page of early summer, long days, leafy greens, colorful flowers, and that June promise of warmer days. Early June was always a great house cleaning month; windows could be opened to let the fresh air “blow through the house”….. is there anything more Nova Scotian than that!!!!
At our office we have been exceptionally busy getting ready for the 2026 Convention by highlighting some of our larger projects…and most importantly looking forward to seeing each other and spending some time together. Our Committees continue their work, polishing initiatives and focusing on issues that have the greatest impact.
Our Pensions & Benefits Committee has opened the book on pension reform and learning more every day about how to protect and improve our pension. Time for all of us to open the book and learn more. So, the biggest ‘page turn’ for this June is an all-out effort to communicate with our MLA’s, sharing our views on our Benefits and Pension Plan, seeking the action required to bring the challenges to light and work toward a solution to the losses our membership has endured over the years. Let’s get to work!!
Key Messages
As noted above, our big ask of you now is to visit your MLAs to discuss your challenges with our pension and benefits. Some of the Provincial Executive have started visiting with local MLAs in HRM. Those whom we have spoken to have stressed how very keen MLAs are to hear from you. They invite you to visit, call, or write – a text, an email or a letter. They want to hear your story about how the lack of cost-of-living increases with limited benefits have impacted you. They stressed, you can make a real difference.
The 2025 regular resolutions have been approved by the Provincial Executive, except for the “Technology Strategy”, which was submitted in error. Advocacy letters have been sent and the other resolutions are fully underway or completed. A Tracking Report will be available at the Convention as requested last year and will be placed on our website.
Speaking of our website, our new website will be launched on July 1st!! We are very excited about our new look and greater functionality. You will now be able to join or renew your membership online. We are looking for pictures to include on the front page. If you have any you would like to share, please send them to We hope to change pictures regularly to highlight the beauty of our province and some of the activities of NSGREA Regions or members.
You will receive your invitation to the 2026 Convention within the next couple of weeks. As a reminder, it will be held on Monday, September 21st at the NSGEU building at 255 John Savage Ave. Registration starts at 8:30. The Convention starts at 9:30. You must be a member in good standing to attend.
Breaking News!! Much to our great delight, we now have a Treasurer. Matt DuBois from Region #3 has graciously stepped up to take on this role for the remaining 2 months of this year. He will be running for Treasurer at the upcoming Convention.
The Strategic Planning Committee has been working hard. You will have or will soon receive a brief survey re the draft Vision and Mission statements to ensure we are on the right track. We hope to be holding some in-person gatherings to hear from members about your priorities and hopes for what the Association could be!! Stay tuned!
As some of you may recall, one of the resolutions in 2025 was to acquire accessible office space. Currently we are on the second floor with stairs and no elevator. So, we have given notice to our landlord and will be moving soon. We hope to inform you about our new home within the next few weeks.
We now have 80%+ of our members paid up and we have been cleaning up our database and removing members who have not paid their fees prior to 2024. In this way we will have a more accurate list of members.
This just in!!! We have interest in the Office Admin. Assistant position. If this is a good fit for both the applicant and the office, we will have a full slate of officers and a fully staffed office for the first time in 10 months. YAY!!
With that, I can say things are moving along well as we look ahead to our office move and the 2026 Convention. We hope to hear from many of you by visit, phone call, or letter, and to see you at the Convention in September.
Until next month!! Enjoy the beginning of summer!
